Menkes hevur eina kandidatútbúgving í filmsframleiðslu frá UCLA (1989), er tvær ferðir Fulbright Fel- low fyri Miðeystur og limur í filmsdeildini hjá California Institute of the Arts.

Guaranteed to change your perspective on cinema, Brainwashed is the brainchild of filmmaking professor Nina Menkes. The documentary presents a thorough study of Hollywood’s most successful, cel- ebrated films in order to understand the unseen power dynamics in play between those behind the camera, on camera and the viewer. Revealing examples break down how the framing, camera move- ment and lighting all contribute to the audience experience, and how the male gaze behind these elements have led to a normalized culture of the rape and exploitation of women. We the audience are left with the dawning realization that the industry needs to start from scratch to learn how to accurately portray the female experience. This is a must watch for cinephiles, filmmakers, and gener- al audiences alike, and welcomes the beginning of a new cinematic language for the future.

Considered a cinematic feminist pioneer and one of America’s foremost inde- pendent filmmakers, Menkes has shown widely in major international film festivals including multiple premieres at Sun- dance, the Berlinale, Cannes (ACID). Nina Menkes synthesizes inner dream- worlds with harsh, outer realities. She has been called “brilliant, one of the most provocative artists in film today” by the Los Angeles Times. Menkes holds an MFA in Film Production from UCLA (1989), is a two-time Fulbright Fellow to the Middle East and is a member of the film faculty at California Institute of the Arts
